Mozart's Don Giovanni
in the Barons' Hall at
Arundel Castle
with Candlelight Opera & The Candlelight Chamber Orchestra
Comedy, sex, tragedy, a gruesome ending and some of the most magnificent music ever composed. No it's not a Hollywood blockbuster, but Mozart's 18th century operatic retelling of the libidinous Don Juan's story, Don Giovanni which is expected to be one of the highlights of this year's Arundel Festival. This tale of dissolution and retribution will unfold when the elegant Candlelight Opera company takes over the Castle's magnificent Barons' Hall for a new, fully staged production of one of Mozart's most compelling stage works.
Candlelight Opera, a company of professionally-trained singers, specialises in performing at some of the UK's most beautiful houses and stately homes, and promises audiences "a combination of fine voices, swirling dresses and magnificent surroundings".
After it's highly successful performance of Mozart's Cosi fan tutte last summer, the company is returning to Arundel Castle , once again turning to Mozart's musical magic for the evening's entertainment. The Don commits murder, attempts multiple seductions, and finally gets his comeuppance when he is condemned to hell. A maze of secondary plotlines adds romance and humour, while Mozart's music soars throughout. The atmospheric stage of the opera will be set in the style and manner of Charles II's Restoration court and promises a beautifully costumed production with the cast wearing daring 17th century-styled-dress.

Henry 15th Duke of Norfolk restored Arundel Castle between 1875 and 1900 in Gothic style. The magnificent Barons' Hall with an oak hammerbeam roof was completed in 1898, it occupies the site of the medieval hall of the Fitzalan Earls of Arundel. It also replaces the smaller octagonal Great Hall built by Charles, 11th Duke of Norfolk to commemorate the 600th anniversary of the signing of the Magna Carta (1215).
